Well, finishing taking a shower. I hear my doorbell ring (which is always someone I don't know because only the front doorbell rings, and no one who knows us goes to the front door. Do you care about this detail?). I heard dogs barking outside. I heard pounding on the door. I heard dogs barking louder outside. I'm thinking, "Keep your shirt on!" as I pull on the first thing I find in my dresser--my tried-and-true black and white Adidas warm-up pants and a Fox t-shirt. I guess it's gonna be casual Thursday--thanks nameless person at the door.
I get out there and there is an older couple and their daughter. They're asking about the house. I explain that it is a complete wreck and is not in any shape for them to see it. They insist, telling me they're not from around here. Going against every instinct I have, I let them walk through. As I walk through the house with them, I am utterly humiliated by the horrible condition the house is in. I mean, it's even worse than I had first thought, and I knew it was bad. I mean, they got me right out of the shower. My underwear was still on the bathroom floor, where all three of them decided to go (at the same time. It was the same effect as the clown car at the circus). They were making comments the whole time on how small and how narrow the house was.... My guess is they've never seen a bungalow before?
When all was said and done, I offered to call them when we are moved out and the house is cleaned up. But not before the daughter asked what we were asking. I told them, and she was like, "Oh, we just looked at one in this neighborhood that they wanted $104,000 for." I'm thinking, there is no way there's a house in here that is being sold for $104,000 in this neighborhood. Even the dumps seem to go for more than that here since it's a "desirable" neighborhood and all. We bought this house for a bit more than $104k five years ago, c'mon! So she was visibly put off. I bet the fact that my house was a pig sty didn't help. That's just too darn bad. If you're gonna insist on seeing the house of someone who is moving in a week, you just have to get over it!
However, this incident was enough to turn my day upside down. I am tired of living in this house in this condition. I love this house, and think it's very cute. I don't love the fact that everyone in my family collects crap (and I DO mean crap) and then feels the need to put it in messy piles. Neat piles are one thing. It's like Billy rummages through all of his stuff over and over and over. I'm going to start tossing things. I do need to stop talking about it, though, because I'll get myself mad and upset again.
Why did I let the people in? It was probably the stupidest thing I've ever done, I'll admit it. I just didn't have the heart to turn them away... But they also weren't going away. I wasn't answering my phone or my door. Why keep knocking/calling? The more I think of it, the more rude that was. Hey, people, you're not good enough for my house. Heh.
....and then there were 5.
