I got a call today from one of my closest friends, Laurel. She left me a message saying she had a very important question for me. I am baffled. What could this question be? The selfish part of my brain guesses Laurel is going to beg me to let her buy our old house for the unbelievably low price of $155,000.00 (a steal!). In reality, Laurel is asking me if I would like to be the guardian of her almost-two-year-old son, Alex, in the case that something happens to her and her husband. Her husband is in the Army and leaving for Iraq on Thursday, so this is not as far-fetched of a possibility as it may have sounded at first.
Mom called me Saturday and asked if I wanted to be the one to decide whether to pull the plug should she ever be on life support and Gordy can't make that decision.
It is strange to have people willing to trust their lives or the lives of their offspring to you. I don't know whether to feel honored or overwhelmed!
....and then there were 5.

I hope that I never have to make that kind of decision with my mother.
Me too. Really.
